So after recently diving into energy work and how it can help with healing and wellness, we wanted to get into some of the specific energy healing modalities like acupuncture. Acupuncture is part of the healing modality of traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for thousands of years to help with a variety of ailments. It has also been scientifically proven to bring results for health, healing, and well-being.

In Chinese medicine, the body is seen as an energetic field and in a state of health, energy is able to flow freely and optimally. However, if there is a disease, energetic blockages are created. Acupuncture helps to restore the body back to balance and allows for healthy energy flow where physical and emotional disorders are not possible.

How does acupuncture work?

Through the lens of Western medicine, it is difficult to fully explain and understand how acupuncture works. There are a few different explanations and theories. One theory is that acupuncture works by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals.

It is also thought that acupuncture influences the nervous system and helps release chemicals within the body that regulate blood flow and pressure, calm the brain, and reduce inflammation. It helps to bring the body out of the fight or flight mode to the rest and into the rest and digest mode. Ultimately helping to create more balance and peace within the body.

What does an acupuncture session look like?

In a typical acupuncture session, the treatment will begin with your acupuncturist checking your pulse and looking at your tongue. In traditional Chinese medicine, these are two main methods to get an idea of the current state of the body. Your acupuncturist may also ask you some questions like how your sleep quality is, what your emotions have been like, and how your bowel movements are. These are all different indicators of health and give an insight as to what is going on within your body.

A typical session will be between 20 to 30 minutes long depending on your treatment. Once you are laying down and in a comfortable position very thin needles will be placed into different parts of your body. Your acupuncturist decides these points based on your condition. After you will be left to relax for approximately 20 minutes. Some people fall asleep and others may just feel a calm sensation over their body. After relaxing with the needles in your acupuncturist will gently remove all the needles and you can continue with the rest of your day. After a session its best to not do too intense physical activity. Rest if possible and take it easy throughout the day.

Does it hurt?

One of the most common questions is does acupuncture hurt? When the needles are inserted or while they are in you, you may feel a little pinch or sting, or maybe an ache. However, if you experience pain, numbness, or discomfort during treatment you should let your acupuncturist know immediately.

Traditional healing methods like acupuncture and Chinese medicine, as well as western medicine both have their place. If you are looking to improve your health and well-being, acupuncture might be something to try. However, always check with your doctor to make sure it’s right for you.
