How to make CBD cream: a guide to making your own topical CBD products

Making your own cosmetics is on trend. As more and more people are eager to know exactly what they’re putting on their skin, making your own body butter or facial oil becomes increasingly popular. You can even make your own CBD cream, using all-natural ingredients and high quality CBD extract. In this article, we discuss what ingredients you can (or should) use, and how to mix your own products.

How to make CBD cream: What you’ll need

Whatever type of CBD cream you want to make, you’ll need roughly the same set of ingredients:

CBD oil

To make CBD cream, you need high quality CBD oil. Here, potency really matters. The stronger your CBD oil, the less of it you’ll need to add to your product. We recommend measuring out how much CBD oil you are using, so you know exactly how many milligrams of CBD are in your final product.

To make a skincare CBD face cream, you may want to use just 100 or 200mg of CBD in total. But if you’re looking to make CBD pain cream, don’t hesitate to use up to 1000mg of CBD or more.

Hydrating ingredients

The natural oils and butters that you put in your CBD cream will have a massive impact on texture. Ingredients like shea butter and cocoa butter create a dense cream that’s perfect for small areas of skin. On the other hand, you can use more fluid oils like argan and hempseed for a lighter consistency cream you can apply to your whole body.

Essential oils

Essential oils are what you’ll be using to add scent to your homemade CBD cream. Choose them based on their aroma and on their unique properties.

Cooking utensils

To mix your CBD cream, you’ll need a salad bowl, a spatula, and potentially a whip. You can even use an electric whip to make whipped body butter with shea or cocoa butter.

A container

Finally, you’ll need a container to store your CBD cream in. Choosing a dark-glass, airtight container is the best way to preserve the freshness of the product for as long as possible.

How to make CBD cream: the mixing process

Now that we’ve addressed the ingredients you’ll need, let’s take a closer look at the actual making of the cream.

Making homemade CBD cream is a little like baking: you need exact measurements, patience, and basic cooking utensils.

The best way to make CBD cream is to mix all of your hydrating ingredients first. We recommend using 1 part “solid” ingredients (cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil if you live in a cold place), and 1 part “liquid” ingredients (like argan oil, hempseed oil, or extra virgin olive oil). Mix them well using a spatula, a whisk, or a food processor. At this point, the texture should be a little creamy but on the thicker side. If you find it too runny, you can add more shea butter or a little beeswax.

Once you’ve obtained your desired consistency, add a few drops of essential oils of choice (lavender, geranium, and lemon are always a favorite). Then, add your CBD oil. Mix the product again very well, in order to make sure the CBD oil is fully incorporated.

And that’s it! Just package your CBD cream in a glass container, close it carefully, and keep it in the fridge or in a cool closet.

A simple hack on how to make CBD pain cream

If you don’t have the patience to mix your own, or if you can’t find all of the ingredients you need, use this hack. Simply choose your favorite body butter (should be oil-based), and put it in a high-spêed blender. Add a few drops of CBD oil and blend until smooth. At this point you can take the product back into the jar it came in and voilà, easy CBD-infused body butter!

If you want an even easier option, you can also purchase ready made CBD cream—which tends to be very affordable (sometimes cheaper than CBD oil for the same number of milligrams). Below are some high-quality options we highly recommend!

CBD infused whipped body butter

1. Endoca Whipped Body Butter

This creamy body butter is whipped to perfection

If you’re not in the mood for whipping your own cocoa and shea butter, why not let Endoca do it for you? This wonderfully creamy body butter is made with whipped cocoa and shea butter, coconut oil, and vanilla extract. It has a delightful, dense consistency, a sweet smell, and some serious hydrating power.

Like all Endoca products, it’s completely natural and made with high-quality CBD extract. The CBD it contains is not only organic and GMO-free but also CO2-extracted (extracted without the help of any solvents) and third-party tested. This makes it a very high-quality product that won’t risk disappointing.

This whipped body butter is available in two potencies: either 300mg or 1,500mg. And this makes a real difference. We recommend the 300mg version for people who want to relieve dry skin, scars, stretched marks, and mild skin conditions. Meanwhile, go for the 1,500mg version if you suffer from pain, cramps, or strong inflammation.

PROS

  • Great texture
  • High potency
  • Moisturizing effect
  • 100% natural ingredients

CONS

  • Not portable
  • Not for you if you don’t appreciate sweet vanilla smells

CBDFx muscle joint cream

2. CBDfx Muscle and Joint Cream Cooling Formula

This pain cream contains cooling menthol and pain-relieving white willow bark extract

Another reason to buy read-made CBD cream is that it can often contain interesting ingredients you wouldn’t be able to find yourself. For example, this CBDfx cream is enriched with white willow bark extract (a natural painkiller that’s the ancestor of aspirin.) It also contains cooling menthol and stimulating caffeine, both of which can help with painful muscles and joints.

In terms of texture, this cream is very easy to spread, almost like a gel. Being water-based rather than oil-based means that it’s able to absorb faster, and without leaving any kind of residue on the skin. On the other hand, it also means it’s not very moisturizing. So if you have dry skin, it may not be the cream for you.

PROS

  • High potency
  • Numbing effect thanks to menthol extract
  • Broad-spectrum CBD extract
  • Texture absorbs fast and doesn’t leave a residue

CONS

  • Not as moisturizing as other creams
  • Not suitable for people who are aspirin-intolerant

CBD Salve Stick

3. Premium CBD Salve Stick by Joy Organics

This simple salve comes in a very portable stick format

Making your own CBD cream can give great results, but it’s generally difficult to package the resulting product in a portable format. If this is something you struggle with, this highly-portable salve stick by Joy Organics will be perfect for you.

Made with 250mg of CBD in just 0.5oz, it’s a medium-potency product that’s highly concentrated and even fits in your back pocket! This makes it a great product for people who need to reapply CBD throughout the day: people with joint pain, muscle spasms, migraines, etc.

In terms of ingredients, this cream is just as natural as anything you’d make yourself. It contains shea butter, jojoba oil, hemp seed oil, and rosemary leaf extract. It’s also unscented, which makes it suitable for people with more sensitive skin. Finally, it has a great texture that makes it fast to absorb into the skin. If you’re looking for a topical CBD product you can just slip in your purse, look no more!

PROS

  • Very portable format
  • Natural ingredients
  • Broad-spectrum CBD extract
  • Fast to absorb
  • Unscented

CONS

  • Only 250mg of CBD
  • High price per milligram of CBD
